Data Sufficiency Age Problem

Data Sufficiency : Data sufficiency is a part of Logical reasoning. It must be noted that other reasoning concepts are used to form data sufficiency questions.

Data Sufficiency Age Related Problems : Problems on ages along with data sufficiency is a common topic from which questions are asked in almost all competitive exams.

Important Formulas : Given below are a few formulas related to the Problems on ages which will help to answer the questions in a faster way:

  • If you are assuming the current age to be x, then the age after n years will be (x+n) years.
  • If you are assuming the current age to be x, then the age before n years will be (x-n) years.
  • If the age is given in the form of a ratio, for example, p:q, then the age shall be considered as qx and px , where x is the common factor
  • If you are assuming the current age to be x, then n times the current age will be (x×n) years
  • If you are assuming the current age to be x, then 1/n of the age shall be equal to (x/n) years
  • Directions : Each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question.

  • (a) If the data in statement I alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement II alone are not sufficient to answer the question
  • (b) If the data is statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement I alone are not sufficient to answer the question
  • (c)  If the data either in statement I alone or in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question
  • (d)  If the data given in both statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question; and
  • (e)  If the data in both statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.
  • Question : Read both the statement and give answer.  What is Gagan's age ?

    I.  Gagan, Vinnal and Kunal are all of the same age.

II.  Total age of Vinal, Kunal and Anil is 32 years and Anil is as old as Vinal and Kunal together.

    Solution : (e) :

    Answer :

    According to statement 1 : we have G = V = K,

    According to statement 2 : we have V + K + A = 32 and A = V + K.

    Now using both the equations:

    Putting V + K = A in V + K + A = 32, we have :

    A + A = 32

    or 2A = 32, A = 16 years

    Now, V + K = A

    V + K = 16 and V = K from statement 1.

    Now, 2V = 16, V = 8 = K.

Thus G is also equal to 8, according to statement 1.
